In High School, I was plagued with the question, "Why do I painfully stew over small things, while my peers so casually brush off minor setbacks?" Then this appeared:
Despite the beauty of the EQ idea, how do you actually improve your score?
Fifteen years later, I think I found the answer in cognitive-therapy. When you get a hit of dysphoria, an EQ-deficient person may think the world is crumbling down. But after applying CT, they will narrow it down to dissatisfaction with work, then dissatisfaction with their co-worker, to finally dissatisfaction with a particular incident, which will lead to a very specific and appropriate response. Without CT, they would otherwise just live in a depressed haze for a week until the initial triggering incident somehow becomes a non-issue.
